| Are People with Mental Illness Violent? |
Sad to read in the Straits Times today of another murder case involving a mentally ill person.
Masseur Lim Ah Liang, 28, was sentenced to life in prison for killing his agent due to a fall out over money matters.
The court heard that Lim had a history of mental illness and theft.
He suffered from chronic depression, had attempted suicide previously, and was also likely to re-offend if he was not jailed for a long time.
Dr Tommy Tan, a consultant psychiatrist with the Institute of Mental Health recommended that Lim be monitored for life and receive long-term medication, as he could relapse and be a danger to himself and others.
The fact is that the majority of people with mental illness are not violent or dangerous when under treatment. |
