Depression and Suicide
A recent survey has found that 70 per cent of suicides are committted by people with some form of mental illness, especially depression.

A recent press report in the Straits Times reported two suicide deaths related to depression. The first case involved a German intern at Siemens, who felt depressed and ashamed after stealing from her colleagues.

Emanuela Christiane Noell, 26, was found dead in a hotel with multiple injuries on her neck and arms on September 23, 2005. She had cut herself using razor blades and one cut was on her let jugular vein.

In the other case, a Singapore Management University (SMU) lecturer had a relapse of depression after a student alleged that he had molested her.

Thomas Tan Tsu Wee, 57, leapt to his death from a block of flats at Marine Drive on October 2, 2005.

Tan felt depressed over the student’s allegation in June and told his wife repeatedly he wanted to die.

In August, he saw a psychiatrist who found him to be suffering from a relapse of his depression with anxiety features.
