| Stigma Worsens Mental Illness |
I have been quoted in today's Straits Times Supplement 'Mind Your Body' with regards to the above.
The article talks about the negative impact of stigma on recovering and recovered mental patients.
Unfortunately, nurse educator Poh Chee Lien said that over 90 per cent of those who were interviewed at Institute of Mental Health said they faced stigma from family, friends, employers and colleagues.
My contribution is that mental patients should not 'stigmatize themselves'. This means protecting their self-esteem against comments such as 'mentally ill people' are weak or violent.
Associate Professor Chong Siow Han, vice-chairman, Medical Board (Research) at IMH sums it all up by saying 'You can gauge how civilized a society is by the way they treat their mentally ill'. |
